Lectures and Classes

Hello there, quilty people!  I'm delighted that you're checking out my lecture and class offerings, and I'd love to visit you!  My schedule is completely booked for the remainder of 2022, but I am booking 2023 and 2024 now.  It is so much fun to visit quilters at shops, retreats, guild meetings, or other events, and I would love to teach your group a fun, new technique.

As a former teacher of 15 years, I get so much joy from sharing knowledge with others.  I love encouraging creativity, risk-taking, and most of all, I enjoy watching quilters tackle a new skill with apprehension at first, and grow confident with just a little guidance and practice.

For me, quilting can sometimes be relaxing, sometimes energizing, and let's face it- sometimes a little bit frustrating.  My classes are designed to maximize the creativity of participants, while minimizing the frustration that sometimes comes with trying out a new skill.  Above all, I keep the mood of my lectures and classes light and fun!

Please email me at kelly(dot)d(dot)young77(at)gmail(dot)com for pricing, scheduling, and general inquiries.  I look forward to talking with you!

Lectures/Trunk Shows Offered-

Make Your Scraps Work!  Quilts from my books, Scrappy Improv Quilting and Stash Statement

This trunk show includes all quilts from my first two books, as well as a few others, and I'll show you just how easy it is to use your own scraps to create quilts with amazing texture and interest.

Classes Offered-

Classes from Scrappy Improv Quilting (my second book)

Welcome to structured improvisation, where there's a plan in place, but still plenty of room to play!  With my book, Scrappy Improv Quilting, whether your quilting style is modern or more traditional, your scraps are sure to shine in this collection of mini quilts.

Intro to Improvisation (half-day)

Grab your scraps and let's jump right in!  Improvisational (or unplanned) piecing is simpler than you think, and is a very versatile way to sew.  I'll teach you the three different methods outlined in my book to turn your scraps into a quilt that is uniquely yours, and I'll present examples of how to apply improvisational piecing to other, more structured quilt designs.  All Skill Levels

Structured Improvisation with Scrappy Improv Quilting (full-day)

We'll begin by learning how to piece your own scraps using the three methods for improv piecing outlined in my book, Scrappy Improv Quilting.  These methods allow you to use plenty of larger pieces (even though all of the pieces in the finished quilt appear tiny!). Then, you'll incorporate those happy, scrappy blocks into a fun quilt pattern from the book.  By using your own treasured scraps, you'll create a mini quilt uniquely yours, and you're sure to love it!  This fun method is versatile, and with step-by-step patterns to follow, it is doable for every single quilter!  All Skill Levels

Whether you choose a half-day or full-day class option from Scrappy Improv Quilting, each class participant will receive Take Flight and Sweet Bee, two free digital bonus patterns!

I can't wait to talk with you about the unique needs of your group, and I look forward to getting creative and having fun with you.  Contact me soon for more information on pricing and availability, and let's reserve a spot for your group!

  1. I've been wondering when you might jump to the next level with your quilting expertise. If I lived near you I'd be the first one to sign up. I can't wait for your books. :) Hopefully sometime in the future. You have a gift of both quilting and photography, so why not?
I would really love some instruction on your meandering technique. I've been practicing but still feel I'm missing something. Will you ever consider some video tutorials of your techniques? Maybe a Craftsy class? Regardless, congratulations on your new endeavors. Wishing much luch and success.

  2. Do you have a calendar that says when and where you will be teaching? Or what dates you still have open? And a fee scale for you 3 hour and 6 hour classes? I am trying to gather information and did not see it listed any where.

    1. Hello, Heather! I am happy to share my fee schedule, as well as check my calendar for you. Please send me an email with the "Email Me" button on my right sidebar and we can discuss specifics. I am responding to you here instead of in a direct email because you are showing up as a "no-reply blogger." I look forward to hearing from you via email soon!
