Lectures and Classes

I am accepting bookings for lectures and classes for 2017 now.  It is so much fun to visit quilters at shops, retreats, guild meetings, or other events, and I would love to teach your group a fun, new technique!

As a former teacher of 15 years, I get so much joy from sharing knowledge with others.  I love encouraging creativity, risk-taking, and most of all, I enjoy watching students tackle a new skill with apprehension at first, and grow confident with just a little guidance and practice.

For me, quilting can sometimes be relaxing, sometimes energizing, and let's face it- sometimes a little bit frustrating.  My classes are designed to maximize the creativity of participants, while minimizing the frustration that sometimes comes with trying out a new skill.  Above all, I keep the mood of my lectures and classes light and fun!

Please email me at kelly(dot)d(dot)young77(at)gmail(dot)com for pricing, scheduling, and general inquiries.  I look forward to talking with you!

Lectures/Trunk Shows-

My Modern Quilting Journey: A Fresh Take on Timeless Tradition

In this lecture and trunk show, I will share my personal quilting journey, which has spanned almost 18 years, through the lens of modern quilting.  This show is perfect if your group is a little unsure of exactly what modern quilting is all about; or if you know modern quilts when you see them, but have a tough time defining exactly what constitutes the modern aesthetic. The presentation includes each defined attribute of modern quilting, and how these modern elements are very easily implemented, to give an entirely new look to more traditional designs.  After this lecture, you'll have no trouble identifying and defining the characteristics of modern quilting for yourself.

Classes Offered-

It is important to me that when you leave my classes, you have gained more than just the knowledge to make a single quilt or block.  I like to teach techniques that have a wide variety of possibilities for application.  I want you to feel confident and excited about how this new skill will work in your own quilting.

I offer classes for each of my published patterns, as well as a couple of "method" classes, which do not use a pattern.  Classes are either three or six hours, and during that time, it is my goal for each participant to learn the design method, and have a good start on a lap size quilt by completing several blocks.

I enjoy teaching patterns and methods that are fun for a wide range of sewing abilities.  All of my pattern classes are suitable for a confident beginner, but would be enjoyable for an experienced quilter as well.  A few patterns are even appropriate for beginning quilters, however all class participants should have prior general sewing experience, and basic knowledge of sewing machine operation.  Please feel free to contact me with questions regarding the skill level for a specific pattern!

3 Hour Pattern Classes-
*class fees include a PDF pattern for each participant.

3 Hour Method Classes-

Intro to Improvisation
Grab your scraps and let's jump right in!  Improvisational (or unplanned) piecing is simpler
than you think, and is a very versatile way to sew.  The biggest hurdle to overcome with
improv piecing is our own need for control.  Once you learn to let that go, you'll feel so free!
I'll show you how to turn your scraps into a quilt that is uniquely yours, and I'll present
examples of how to apply improvisational piecing to other, more structured quilt designs.
            Skill Level- All Skill Levels

Structured Improv Piecing
Like the idea of improvisation, but want to ease into it?  Or, maybe you've played with
improv, but aren't sure how to apply it to any quilt pattern?  This class blends modern improv
piecing with a block that has been a cornerstone in quilt design for decades.  This wonderfully
versatile block with so many possibilities is the half-square triangle, of course!  Even though
we'll be sewing with HST's, in this class, I'll show you how easy it is to freshen up ANY quilt
            pattern by using improvisation.

We'll begin by learning how to use your scraps to learn my own method for improv
piecing, which allows you to incorporate plenty of larger pieces (even though all of the pieces
in the finished quilt appear tiny!). Then, you'll incorporate those happy, scrappy blocks into a
fun quilt in the layout of your choice.  When deciding how to arrange HST's, the sky's the
limit!  By using your own treasured scraps and background fabric, as well as your favorite
layout, you're sure to love your finished quilt.  All Skill Levels

*these are just a few of the most popular layout options for HST's

I can't wait to talk with you about the unique needs of your group, and I look forward to getting creative, and having fun with you!

  1. I've been wondering when you might jump to the next level with your quilting expertise. If I lived near you I'd be the first one to sign up. I can't wait for your books. :) Hopefully sometime in the future. You have a gift of both quilting and photography, so why not?
I would really love some instruction on your meandering technique. I've been practicing but still feel I'm missing something. Will you ever consider some video tutorials of your techniques? Maybe a Craftsy class? Regardless, congratulations on your new endeavors. Wishing much luch and success.

  2. Do you have a calendar that says when and where you will be teaching? Or what dates you still have open? And a fee scale for you 3 hour and 6 hour classes? I am trying to gather information and did not see it listed any where.
