Two Four Six

Oh, ABC Family Harry Potter Weekend, I simply cannot resist you.  It does not matter that I own all of the movies and could easily watch them whenever I want sans-commercials.  I inevitably get sucked in every single time and revel in Harry Potter love while I get lots of sewing done.

This weekend, my Harry Potter obsession afforded me the time to put this quilt top together for my wild thing's teacher as an end of year gift.  I make a quilt every year for his teacher, and give them the choice of color palette (or if they prefer, a Christmas quilt).  The colors in this quilt will match her decor.

I think the blue/brown color combo is pretty traditional, but it leans toward a modern feel.  It definitely doesn't feel rustic to me.  As such, this quilt needed a simpler, more modern pattern.  I decided to pair up the blues and browns and sew the blocks together with 2.5 inch strips running through them.  Rather than center the strips, I decided to offset them to make it a little more interesting.  The finished parts of the square are 4 inches and 6 inches on each side of the strip, hence the name- Two Four Six (the block finishes at 12 inches).  It was quick and easy, and I like it's simplicity!

  1. What a nice tradition--I'm sure that when the teachers make assignments every year, everyone asks to get your kid!! I had a friend who was a teacher and at their school was a Mom who made lovely crocheted glass bead necklaces. She said that family's boy was always one of the first ones placed in a class!! It's very thoughtful of you to have them request their color preference, so you can be sure they will love it.

  2. Luv the simplicity of the kwilt and the colors. Just proves every kwilt doesn't have to have points and curves and paper piecing and such. I have been watch Harry Potter movies (for the first time) this winter. I get distracted from the movie whe. Kwilting and have to hit the rewind quite often.

  4. The squares are very deceiving. They look like they are rectangles instead of squares. I have looked and looked and looked at them and they still look like rectangles. Wow! That would fit perfectly in my living room. It looks like the light teal in the walls in my living room and dining room. My carpet is different shades of brown. I have a dark brown recliner that needs to be replaced. Well, actually I need all new living room furniture. I'm not sure when that will get done. I just bought a new sewing machine cabinet. I love it. It has a huge back leaf. I can put my cutting mat up on it and cut, cut, cut. It's a perfect height for a shorty like me. I got a new sewing chair, too. I have to hop up on it and then I'm up where I see to sew. It's an investment in my craft. I love seeing all your projects. How long before you'll know the results of your exam. I'm as excited as you are to know the results. My son-in-law did not get a job offer for a move to Dallas. However, the lady called him and told him why the selected the candidate they chose - experience in financials that he didn't have. And, told him if this candidate doesn't work out, they may be calling him and if they have another opening that fits him, they will be calling. She offered to help him in any way she could. I thought that was phenomenal on her part. I told my daughter he really needs to finish his PhD before they move. When I was taking doc classes, there was a doc student who moved to take a job at a U out of state. He was in a different program than I was and my advisor told him that it would be very difficult for him to finish his dissertation from out of state and the U had that expectation and they would not be happy if he didn't do that. I had to drop out eventually due to health. I'm trying to stress that to my son-in-law. My daughter thought about working on her masters and has changed her mind. She says it's too much with hubby working on PhD and having two youngsters. She is board certified. Again, I love this quilt and enjoy seeing your creations. I always try to kind of mentally work out the pattern. They intrigue me. Thanks for blogging.

  11. Kelly your quilt is very sophisticated looking. Nice gift for a teacher. It looks like the blocks that we are making for our Quilts of Valor quilts our Eastern MO QOV.

  12. The Harry Potter weekends suck me in too. I love watching them on ABC Family because they include all the clips that were cut and our movies dont' have those. I've told my husband that I want the extended versions of every movie because some of those scenes are really good and shouldn't have been cut.

Your quilt is sweet btw. I'm sure the teacher will love it.

  19. I love this pattern; the asymmetrical slices add dynamism to the quilt that I've missed in similar, but regular patterns I've seen in the past. Thanks for sharing how you made it.

  29. Kelly,
I love this quilt I have made a logcabin diamond and wasn't able to find a backing to fit it, so I'm making it reversible and I'm going to do this pattern using the same darker colors that I have in my quilt for the backing. Wish me luck.

    Thanks
    Eric

    1. So happy you like it! This is actually not a pattern, but I just made blocks with strips finishing at 2, 4, and 6 inches. So, cut strips 2.5," 4.5," and 6.6" all 12.5" long. Pair up two contrasting fabrics and sew the blocks. I think I cut two full blocks from each 1/4 yard (or fat quarter). Hope this helps!

      :) Kelly
